Public relations pros have to stay ahead of trends and news for their clients, their clients’ wider industry and then their own – sometimes in that order.

So where do we turn to find PR news and trends? The options and outlets are endless, but here are three of my absolutely-all-time-favorites websites to keep tabs on new PR trends, tips, analytics and tools of the trade (the following all are completely free too):

#1 – Ragan.com: PR News & Resources - Ragan.com delivers practical advice, real-world solutions and field-tested strategies for today’s corporate communicator. This is where I can always find myself surfing five hours after I set out to fact-check something simple because the articles are strategically short, straightforward and smart. S much so that you find yourself thinking, just one more – you have been warned!

#2 – HubSpot: Marketing Resources – This is mecca for any PR pro looking for a site to which to turn those begging beginners, aka those friends who what you to help them launch a Facebook page or explain what a blog is. They have awesome resources for advanced lessons in the dark arts of in-bound marketing, but the best base of basic webinars, guides and how-tos I have found let.

#3 – Mashable – Follow the topics Public Relations & Social PR Guide Series – If you have never heard of Mashable, you have been living under a rock. However, to narrow down the infinite articles, follow the suggested topics to find PR content.

Ragan.com, a website providing news and advice on public relations and marketing, recently published an article called 53 Signs You Work in Public Relations. Taking a page from the familiar “You know you’re a {BLANK} when…” joke setup, the article is a collection of reader-generated anecdotes about public relations professionals. The article lists popular, humorous and exaggerated attributes of today’s PR pros.

I believe that some of the signs are exaggerated, but others are spot on (at least for me). Here are my favorites (and I believe accurate) anecdotes from 53 Signs You Work in Public Relations:

11. You proudly put “PR pro” in your Twitter bio, knowing it is the one place you don’t have to explain your job

16. “Relax” time is in the shower when you always seem to come up with the best PR pitches

17. After your coffee, you spend 20 minutes deleting Google Alerts of clients, competitors, and everything in between

38. You read/hear about a company’s crisis and instantly think, “I wonder who their AOR (agency of record) is”

42. You actually take surveys. It’s good client karma, right?

43. You think and speak in 140 characters or less

44. You call taking any photo a “Photo-op”

48. Client’s products are decorations on your desk

However, every firm has its own culture and quirks that shapes its employees. So in honor of a big Maven announcement (‘embargoed until’) next week, here are a few good signs that a PR Maven is among us:

You Know You’re a PR Maven When…

1. You start using ‘circle back, debrief, touch base’ on a daily basis, even when discussing weekend plans with friends and family

2. Deciding where to go to lunch is an item on the agenda when it involves more than one Maven for a holiday, birthday, or client meeting

3. You’re always thinking about how to “repurpose” blog entries, articles and white papers

4. You cannot get enough green (have you ever heard, ‘Go Green?’ The subliminal message is a new business driver for Maven but we don’t recommend it for clients. You can’t imagine how long it took us to get the ‘green’ movement going)

5. You eat lunch at 11 am because you have developed a Pavlovian response to the microwave beeping after Jess heats up her lunch at 10:55 am

6. You redefine what it means to multitask, while drafting a release for a healthcare digital marketing client, editing a legal newsletter in Mail Chimp, emailing two real estate reporters and posting to your company’s Facebook page — all within 30 minutes

7. You look forward to Monday morning company status update meetings because it is nice to chat about our own and our clients work from the big picture and minute details (plus someone usually brings treats)

8. Links to breaking headline news stories get forwarded around the office faster than an email chain letter threatening three years of bad luck (news of amazing discounts is the second fastest forward)

9. You want to put your company logo on everything (to date: mouse pads, water bottles, t-shirts, doggie bandana, office walls and post-it pads – come get a post-it pad because we have a LOT! Yes, Sarah made most of the stuff so it is mostly her fault…)

10. You depend on Outlook’s calendar listings and organized email folders (color coding is imperative too)

11. You believe personal preferences are as contagious as the common cold among coworkers, especially Rebecca’s fashion sense, Jess’ recipes and Sarah’s music tastes

12. When something big happens in the news you wonder if it is big enough to qualify for Maven’s annual year-end top 10 list of the year’s biggest PR snafus aka our holiday card (click here to sign up for our newsletter to get this holiday card)

13. You truly enjoy and respect interns and appreciate internship programs (the best way to learn about PR is ‘in the field’), especially Drexel University’s amazing Co-Op Program and dedicated students (Go Dragons!)

14. You get really excited when a prized media outlet publishes its 2012 editorial calendar, which can be anytime between September and December (it’s like Christmas before Christmas)

Stay tuned to our website, blog, Facebook and Twitter for more Maven breaking news, anecdotes and insight!

We’re quickly approaching the halfway point of 2011. For many of us, that also means we’re approaching the halfway point in our marketing campaign for the year. How effective has it been so far? If your boss asked, could you provide ROI today? If campaign measurement isn’t something that you’re going to worry about until November, you might want to think again.

Most people think that evaluation is something that happens at the completion of a campaign. In fact, evaluation should happen at different intervals throughout the year. This way you have the ability to assess the effectiveness and then adjust accordingly, creating an even stronger campaign. In addition, evaluation provides an opportunity for ongoing improvement and helps guide the campaign in a successful direction.

Think about campaign evaluation as a circular process – information is acquired, changes are made based on that information, more information is acquired, more changes are made, and so on. This is a relatively straightforward process, if you’ve built in the appropriate framework for evaluation. If you haven’t, or aren’t sure, here are a few things to consider:

Make sure your objectives are measurable. While a goal is a general outcome expected when a campaign or program is completed, an objective is very specific and based on projected and actual program outcomes. Your campaign objectives should be unambiguous and stated in a clear way that allows you to determine whether they have been met. They should be specific in terms of timeframe and outcome. For example: our objective is to increase the number of hits to our blog 20 percent by December 2011.

Know what you’re measuring and determine the right tool. Surveys can be an excellent way to measure public opinion, consumer sentiment, and awareness, but it is not a one-size-fits all measurement tool. If your objective is to increase web traffic then use a website analytics tool like Google Analytics; if you’re looking to measure awareness you can conduct an online survey; or if your objective is to ensure your key messages are conveyed in your press coverage, then a media analytics program like Vocus or Burrelles Luce may be appropriate.

Determine a benchmark. Inherently, measurement is a comparative tool. To effectively measure the relative success or failure of a campaign, you need to compare to something else. (For example, if your website gets 10,000 unique visitors/month but your biggest competitor gets 40,000, it may be time to adjust your strategy). The most effective comparisons are to the competition and peers over time, however that information isn’t always available. Another benchmark is to compare your results to past performance over a specific time period.

Once you’ve collected all of your data, draw conclusions and adjust. Ideally with each change made, the campaign gets stronger and produces better results. At the end of the day, continuous evaluation of a marketing campaign allows for those who control the marketing dollars to see the real value and return in real, hard numbers and positive results.

Prudential Fox and Roach, Realtors , the tri-state region’s #1 residential real estate firm, approached Maven to help them communicate the agency’s breadth and depth of resources and services to internal and external audiences. As the regional market leader, PF&R was looking for new ways to engage agents, consumers and the media, while continuing to position the firm as the source for residential real estate market information.

A fraction of Maven’s strategy was to create and maintain a company blog featuring regional real estate data, lifestyle stories, tips and community profiles. The blog was developed to engage potential home buyers and sellers, while also serving as a resource for PF&R agents looking to share the latest market information.

Here is a sample entry on the homes of our hometown, home run-hitting Phillies from Prudential Fox and Roach’s blog:

In honor of the home opener, we’ve highlighted of the homes and neighborhoods of our favorite Phillies who live in the Philadelphia region. Just for kicks, we also included their salaries for the year, and calculated how many homes they could buy in the region.

The statistics behind facebook and individual pages is a world of wonder for communication professionals and marketing mavens.

Remember the days when a facebook page looked like this?

Facebook now consumes our personal and professional lives. Instead of hearing news through the grapevine, we read it in our newsfeed or friend’s status updates. This does not signify the loss of interpersonal relationships and communication but an evolution. The best part of evolution is studying it, learning from it and improving. They say facebook is worth upwards of $50 billion, but the tracking woven into the facebook fabric makes it priceless. We have all accessed an app and begrudgingly gave permission to access our personal information… or is that just me? That access gives people a glimpse into your city, relationship status, age, music tastes, job and more. It all depends on what the app asks permission for. Recently apps have upped the ante and I can’t help thinking ‘when you give a mouse a cookie…’ My privacy setting are as private as possible but even so I am sure my info is accessible, especially because I find myself using apps when establishing or monitoring client pages. The more pages, the more apps, the most susceptible we all are. I am fine with some of my information, as long as it does not come back to me through email spam, text messages or facebook messages. The statistics provided by facebook are invaluable to marketers. I just wish they would apply insights to personal pages so I can satisfy by ego and checkout my traffic. Well, to get a round this oversight, please visit our Maven facebook page, if you are reading this…

Some words of wisdom for those posting on personal pages or on behalf of your organization. Do yourself a favor and subscribe to Dan Zarrella’s blog and newsletter. He has great insight, easy to decipher visuals and, most importantly, he knows his stuff. Below see some useful findings from Dan. The site keeps growing adding features, function and fun. I though facebook hit the apex when they added photos but ain’t no mountain high enough and people can’t get enough of it. I could illustrate this by laying out all the most recent stats but instead just take a look below:

Now go post entry to your facebook page!

Obama’s Health Problems
Healthcare Reform Slowly Rises and Crumbles – On March 6, 2010, President Obama urged Congressional passage of his health care reform proposal within which Obama laid out a myriad of objectives. Cheers to that Apple employee. We hope he finds unemployment leaves more time for boozing and that he likes his new Blackberry.

BP’s Big Spill

The explosion of BP’s drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico left more than 206 million gallons of oil in the Gulf and embattled CEO Tony Hayward wanting “his life back.” Known as the largest oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry, the full impact may not be known for years to come. Click here to track the oil spill.

Immigration Abomination
Arizona Passes Tough Anti Illegal Immigration Law – On April 23, 2010, Arizona passed the anti-immigration law that crossed the line and bordered on loco. The law would make the failure to carry immigration documents a crime and allow police to detain anyone suspected of being in the country illegally.

Weapons of mass construction- In May 2010, controversy spread upon plans to construct a Mosque just 600 feet from where the World Trade Centers stood. After rallies, riots and threats of bible burning, the building of the mosque has been postponed, perhaps indefinitely.

Free Chile
On October 13, 2010, a 69-day nightmare ended for the trapped Chilean miners and their families. Trapped 2,041 feet under the ground, all 33 miners were saved in a 22 hour rescue mission.

A data dump of thousands of classified documents on WikiLeaks caused a firestorm of debate on the role of responsible journalism and social media, as well as a man hunt for its founder.
Party Like It’s 1773
The Tea Party grass roots movement proved successful in 2010’s Mid-Term Elections – from South Carolina to Wisconsin, candidates endorsed by the party defeated Democrats in states they were projected to win. This successful movement has been so influential that it is inspiring “the left side” to form a coalition. That’s right – over 170 liberal and civil rights groups are forming a coalition in hopes that they will match the tea party’s political power on the right.

Our favorite stories of 2010 that did not make the list, but made it into our hearts:

Jess – Hide Yo Kids, Hide Yo Wife: The Bed Intruder

My favorite news story of the year isn’t actually for the “news,” but more for after effect that it had. I’m referring to Antoine Dodson, better known as the “singer” of The Bed Intruder song. In case you’ve been living under a rock, here’s a quick recap: In July a local TV station in Huntsville, Alabama did a segment on a woman who was the victim of attempted sexual assault by a man who entered her bedroom through a window. During that segment the reporter interviewed her brother, Antoine Dodson, and his almost comical interview piqued the interest of The Gregory Brothers, who created a remix, which then went viral.

Because of the sudden fame, Dodson now has two websites, www.antoinedodsonsworld.com and www.antoinedodson.net, over 317,000 ‘likes’ on his facebook fan page, he’s performed his hit “song” live on stage at the 2010 BET Hip Hop Awards, has appeared on Tosh.0, he has a merchandise line, ringtone, personal holiday phone greeting, the Antoine Dodson Halloween costume was one of the most popular this year, and the song has been covered by numerous well-known performers.

I love this story because it demonstrates the power that social media has. Antoine has literally used his Internet fame as a vehicle out of poverty. This story also demonstrates generational differences when it comes to social media. Dodson, 24, embraced the video and “fame” and ran with it. An individual of a later generation may not have done the same. Perhaps The Gregory Brothers would have a lawsuit on their hands instead. Dodson’s 15 minutes are up soon (if not already), but social media provided a door for him that didn’t even exist just a few years ago.

Rebecca – Team Coco moves to TBS
Following his public battle with NBC and the aftermath of the Lenopocalypse, Conan emerged as a clear winner in the battle of media influencers this year. “Team Coco’s” grass roots communications approach confirmed that having a smaller, dedicated following can wield far more influence than a large, uninvolved group.

Rather than whining to the network big wigs and a traditional broadcast strategy, Conan went straight to his fan base. Following his cross-country “Legally Prohibited from being Funny of Television Tour,” Conan lit the internet on fire and drew millions of fans through Team Coco, his digital and social media team. In just a few months, Conan and his team attracted more than 1M fans on Facebook and more than 2M twitter followers. Team Coco fans can check out his Tumblr and Flickr pages, YouTube videos (more than 8M views), and secure the Conan blimp badge on Foursquare. In a stroke of genius, the merry band of misfits launched a poll on TeamCoco.com that let fans vote for Conan’s first guest. (Top Contenders: Jack Nicholson, The Pope and Vladimir Putin and the guy from REO Speed Wagon). The “Live Coco Cam,” a 24 hour webcast of the mayhem that goes on his L.A. offices, has provided endless hours of entertainment and has further cemented Conan’s quirky, irreverent brand among younger viewers.

Did it work? The proof is in the (virtual) pudding: the season premier of CONAN garnered 4.15 million viewers, over half of which fell into the coveted 18-35 year old demographic. As an unabashed Conan fan, I think the strategy is ingenious. Time Magazine said it best: “In the nice-media era, it’s not just the size of your audience – its’ how intensely they care.”

Molly – LeBron James Trade Tweets
Basketball superstar LeBron James took social media by storm this summer when he decided to take his public relations into his own hands – by creating a twitter account and encompassing over 1 million followers in a matter of weeks. @KingJames was created when the whole world’s attention was on him – during the NBA free agency period.

Fans and followers alike monitored @KingJames every move for several weeks, where after numerous “teasing” tweets, he finally let the world know of his decision to leave his hometown of Cleveland, where he played for the Cleveland Cavaliers since 2003, to join the Miami Heat. Fans were outraged by his decision, leading to the burning of his #23 jersey.

Sarah – Jet Blue Attendant Jets

Working class hero? Disgruntled employee? Raging alcoholic? The world still wonders how he will be remembered. On August 9, 2010, on JetBlue flight 1052, flight attendant Steve Slater made a name for himself and the best exit ever. After a passenger was rude to him, he got justice by swearing at them all over the intercom, getting a Heineken from the fridge, activating the emergency chute and sliding into headline news. Since Slater’s flight to fame, there have been allegations parts of his story have been fabricated or embellished. However, we all enjoyed the jokes and daydreams of how we would go out in style, so I am letting it slide.

As if the slide wasn’t fun enough, Slater then went on every news outlet (within driving distance). JetBlue’s response on its blog BlueTales was cool, collected and kind of perfect. JetBlue made the best of the bad situation, flying under the radar by addressing the situation as an instance, not an issue.

With Slater and a Heine in hand, say farewell to 2010 and slide into 2011 – just remember to enjoy the ride.

I tend to disagree that ‘the best things in life are free.’ However, I jump to try a free web tool or application. Although I may be giving away some of my research secrets and the following are all free, I thought I would share the wealth:

In case you have been living under a rock:

Google Alerts: Email updates of the latest relevant Google results (web, news, etc.) based on your choice of query or topic.

Facebook: A social utility that connects people with friends and others who work, study and live around them.

Twitter: A real-time information network powered by people all around the world that lets you share and discover what’s happening now.

HARO: A social media service that brings reporters and bloggers, news sources and small businesses together to tell their stories, promote their brands and sell their products and services.

Others I like (in alphabetical order because I can’t pick favorites):

Addict-o-matic: A search tool that uncovers the best live sites on the web for the latest news, blog posts, videos and images.

Alexa: A Toolbar and web site provides information about websites including Top Sites, Internet Traffic Stats and Metrics, Related Links, Online Reviews Contact Information and more.

AllTop: A search tool that collects all the headlines of the latest stories from the best sites and blogs that cover a topic and groups these collections — “aggregations” — into individual web pages. It is a good place to start a research project.

BackTweets: A simple tool that shows your tweets linking back, shortened too, to a particular URL.

Bit.ly – A URL cruncher with metrics enabling measurement of number of clicks, countries clicked from, conversations around URL, etc.

BlogPulse: An automated trend discovery system for blogs. BlogPulse applies machine-learning and natural-language processing techniques to discover trends in the highly dynamic world of blogs.

BoardTracker: An innovative forum search engine, message tracking and instant alerts system designed to provide relevant information quickly and efficiently while ensuring you never miss an important forum thread no matter where or when posted.

Compete – Compares and reports competitor site traffic but estimates only of monthly visitor data. Best used on large high-traffic web sites but produces nice looking graphs.

Social Mention: A social media search and analysis platform that aggregates user generated content from across the universe into a single stream of information. You can set up alerts too.

Wordle: is a ‘toy’ for generating “word clouds” from text that you provide. The clouds give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text. You can tweak your clouds with different fonts, layouts, and color schemes. The images you create with Wordle are yours to use however you like. Plus, word clouds are pretty as you can see for yourself with the cloud of this post.

There are plenty more like Delicious, Pitch Rate, HowSociable?, TweetDeck, etc. These are just a few of my go-to free tools but they might not be the sharpest in the shed, so please comment with your favorites and why!

Like the media, public and many other PR/marketing professionals, I am peculiarly captivated and charmed by clever publicity stunts. Publicity stunts dare to be outlandishly imaginative, unexpected and sensational to create a buzz among the masses. The products, companies or people they promote take a seemingly incalculable risk to reap a reward.

Most people associate publicity stunts with incidents like Janet Jackson’s wardrobe malfunction, Speidi‘s (Heidi + Spencer = ridiculous nickname) countless exploits or other celebrity-centric controversies, but hardly anyone thinks of the icon that started it all. Edward Bernays is reputed, and self-proclaimed, as the ”father of public relations,“ but he is also the first publicity stuntman as well. In 1929, the New York City Easter Parade included a group of young women marching to liberate all women with their cigarettes held high billed as ”torches of freedom.“ The event caused a stir, as it was taboo for women to smoke in public at the time. These marchers were symbols of women’s rights and equality as stories appeared in newspapers across the nation.

Little did the public know, it was a well-crafted publicity stunt. Bernays hired the women, mostly young models, to light up Lucky Strike cigarettes at his command in front of the awaiting press. Bernays capitalized on the lingering spark of women’s suffrage to ignite a movement. His client, the American Tobacco Company’s Lucky Strike, had a new crop of impassioned consumers.

To learn more about Bernays and public relations’ beginnings, I recommend watching the BBC’s documentary, ‘Century of the Self.’

Public relations, marketing and advertising have certainly changed since Bernays’ heyday and the changes seem to only accelerate with time and technology. Unconventional stunts or marketing aim to break through the estimated daily 600 – 625 promotional messages Americans experience. They have to be creative, interactive and unexpected to have us talking, thinking and wanting more.

Below are a few infamous stunts that I particularly enjoy and I think, in keeping with their purpose, you will too.

A Publicity Wiener –

In 1936, Oscar Mayer drove into the history books and America’s heart with the debut of its legendary Wienermobile, which still travels around the country and rides out its almost-guaranteed media coverage.

Famous but a Fugitive –

Sprung from one United Press article on the FBI’ most wanted and the positive publicity that resulted, the bureau established its Most Wanted List in 1950 in conjunction with the nation’s news media. It has aided the apprehensions of 152 fugitives as a result of citizen recognition.

You Have to Hand it to Them –

More than seven million people joined hands for 15 minutes for Hands Across America raising $20 million to fight hunger and homelessness on May 25, 1986.

A few stunts closer to home…

¡Yo quiero Taco Liberty Bell! –

As a prank on April Fool’s Day in 1996, a full-page ad appeared in six major American newspapers announcing that Taco Bell had purchased Philadelphia’s historical Liberty Bell to help reduce the country’s debt and it would be renamed the Taco Liberty Bell. By noon, the company owned up to the hoax.

Pin Down a Hit –

In 2008 a Guinness World Record-breaking piñata, which was six-stories tall, filled with 8,000 pounds of candy and located in South Philly, generated a lot of media stories and excitement. The creator, Carnival Cruise Lines, held an event that was full of giveaways, music and food.

Killer Publicity but no Love –

Showtime’s ‘Dexter’ put on a show in 2007 when the fountain in Love Park was turned a deep red. Many Philadelphians saw red after spotting the gruesome promotion.
