What is SEO?

Whether you’re looking to set up a website for your business or thinking about reviving your existing website, there might be one term that keeps popping up— “SEO.” Today, we are discussing what SEO means, the function, and some initial steps you can take to set yourself up for success.

What is SEO?

SEO stands for “Search Engine Optimization.” It’s the practice of optimizing the web pages on your website to make them reach a high position in Google or other search engines’ search results.

SEO focuses on improving the rankings in the organic (non-paid) search results of a search engine.

If you have a website and want to generate more traffic, SEO planning should be part of your marketing strategy. We’ll break down SEO into two essential considerations— on-page SEO and off-page SEO.

On-page SEO

These factors partly decide the ranking of your website. These factors include your site’s technical set-up, such as the quality of your code and site speed. Other factors include content-related aspects such as the structure of your website, the quality of your site’s content, and the user-friendliness of your site.

Keep in mind that these are all factors that you can influence.

On-page factors = elements within your website

Off-page SEO

The other part that determines the ranking of your website is off-page SEO factors. These factors include links to your site from other websites, social media attention, and other marketing activities outside your website.

Keep in mind that these are all factors that can be difficult to influence. However, one of the critical factors is the number and quality of links pointing towards your site.

The more quality, relevant sites that link to your website, the higher your position in Google will be.

Another key off-page factor is your competition relating to the niche of your particular business. In some niches, it is much harder to rank than in others.

The competitiveness of your market has a significant influence on your chances of ranking.

The Primary Goal

Your primary goal should be to build and maintain the best possible website utilizing a sustainable long-term strategy. The ranking will come automatically if your website consists of high-quality content (on-page SEO).

Google wants to get users to the right place. Its mission is to index all the world’s online information and make it universally accessible and useful. So, if your website is the best in your market, Google wants it to rank high in the results.

With that in mind, permanently ranking well with Google demands a comprehensive SEO strategy focused on every aspect of your website and its marketing.

Conclusion

SEO is the practice of optimizing your web pages to make them reach a high position in Google or other search engines’ search results.

Using a sustainable SEO strategy that focuses on every aspect of your site and keeps your user in mind will set you up for long-term success.
