Jeffrey Barg
Vice President

Writer, editor and communications strategist. Multi-instrumentalist and composer. Urban runner and bicyclist. Angry Grammarian.
As a Vice President at Maven Communications, Jeff Barg is a language-obsessed communications strategist, thinker and implementor. An award-winning writer, editor, urbanist and public speaker with wide-ranging experience, he leads communications teams to find the right mix of tools, messengers and audience to amplify any message.
A recovering journalist, Jeff spent more than five years writing the Angry Grammarian column for The Philadelphia Inquirer, and more than seven years at Philadelphia Weekly, the coolest paper the city ever had. He now parlays that experience into expert media relations across print, digital, radio and TV; his work and clients have appeared in national and international media, including The New York Times, the BBC, The New Yorker, The Telegraph, and every publication and media outlet in Philadelphia. His writing has won awards from the national Association of Alternative Newsweeklies, the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association, the Society of Professional Journalists (Keystone State Professional Chapter and Greater Philadelphia Chapter) and the American Planning Association (PA Chapter).
Jeff’s work blends communications with government and community relations, and he has led—both as a consultant and as in-house communications director—communications for companies and organizations in education, civic engagement, workforce development, tech, public health and much more.
Jeff’s volunteer activities include countless hours with various community theaters throughout the region, including grant writing for Players Club of Swarthmore. He also serves as an adviser and former board member of the music education nonprofit Rock to the Future, and as an Election Day poll worker in his South Philadelphia neighborhood.
He holds a Master’s in City Planning and a Bachelor’s in American History and Urban Studies, both from the University of Pennsylvania.
